SECAP™ FIRMWARE UPDATE PROCEDURE

The following instructions describe the procedure to update Secap / Bryce Printer firmware using a PC port, or internal PCMCIA Slot (if equipped).

Warning:
This firmware update procedure is to be used with the following printers only. Secap/Bryce family printers models:

5K-LE / 7K-E / 9K-L / 9K-LC / 11K / 13K / 13K-C / 22K
24K / 24KP / 24KPS / 24KPVC / V-Jet / 26K / 30K / 30KNFO

The printer firmware update can be performed using one of three possible methods.

1. Via the printer Parallel port (Recommended).
2. Via USB port (if equipped)
3. Via PCMCIA Slot (if equipped)

If your printer is equipped with a PCMCIA Card Slot, and you intend to perform the upgrade through a PCMCIA PC Card supplied by Secap, skip to section 4 and follow the procedure described there only. If you are updating the firmware using any other method, follow the directions described below.

USB update is not supported under Dos, Windows 3.1, Windows 95, and Windows NT.

1. Preparation of the printer to receive the Firmware Update

1.1. Connect the printer directly to a PC computer's parallel port or USB Port. Use of Data distribution switch box is not recommended during the update process.

1.2. Make sure the printer power switch is in the Off position.

1.3. Press and hold the On Line key (EJECT ENV. key on 11K, 13K and 13K-C models).

1.4. Still holding the On Line key (EJECT ENV. key on 11K, 13K and 13K-C models), turn the power switch to the On position.

1.5. The printer LCD displays the message ‘System Starting’ followed by ‘System Bootloader ROM REV. xxxxxx’, where xxxxxx represents the current Bootloader version in the printer.

1.6. Release the On Line key (EJECT ENV. key on 11K, 13K and 13K-C models).

1.7. The printer LCD displays the following message:

1.7.1. 22K, 26K and 30K model machines, ‘Select Load Port/ -=USB, +=PARALLEL’.

1.7.2. Press the – or + key to select the desired port to be used

1.7.3. Printer models 9K-L, 9K-LC, 11K, 13K, 13K-C, 24K, 24KP, 24KPS, 24KPVC, V-Jet, 5K-LE and 7K-E, ‘PC Card not Found, PARALLEL (+=Y, -=N)’.

1.7.4. Press the + key for the Parallel port.

1.8. The printer LCD displays the following message:

1.8.1. 30K model machines, ‘Initializing USB’ and ‘Waiting for Loader’ for USB download, or ‘Waiting for Loader’ for Parallel download.

1.8.2. Machine models 9K-L, 9K-LC, 11K, 13K, 13K-C, 24K, 24KP, 24KPS, 24KPVC, V-Jet, 5K-LE and 7K-E, ‘Waiting for Loader’ for Parallel download.

1.9. The printer is now ready for the firmware to be loaded.

2. Update the printer via the Parallel port input
If using Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000 or XP, proceed to section 2.2

2.1. Download Firmware to the Printer using DOS or Windows 3.1 OS.

2.1.1. If running Windows 3.1, close all programs, shutdown Windows and return to a DOS environment.

2.1.2. Insert the update floppy supplied into your computer floppy drive.

2.1.3. If updating from our web site downloaded file, extract the file onto a floppy disk, or to the default local directory created automatically upon execution, C:\BOSXXX, where XXX is the printer model. (30K printer will be used as example at this document).

2.1.4. Change the current directory to the floppy drive root directory, (or to the default local directory created; C:\BOS30K where files were extracted to) by entering x: followed by the Enter key, where ‘x’ is your floppy drive letter. (Usually a:\ or b:\, or your local default path, C:\BOS30K).

2.1.5. Type the word UPDATE followed by the Enter key.

2.1.6. The printer LCD should then display the following sequence of messages:

• 'Reading COMP loader'
• 'Reading Component'
• 'Loading Printer Prog'
• 'Ready for Component'
• '1 Components Loaded'

In order for the changes to take effect you will need to restart your printer by cycling the power Off and On.

The total time for the update procedure should be approximately two minutes.

Note: In special cases the firmware includes a font file as well as a program. The font file is built into the printer at the time of manufacturing. If your firmware update includes the font file, the last message displayed in the printer LCD will be '2 Components Loaded’, then, and only then is the update procedure complete.

2.2. Download Firmware to the Printer using Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000 or XP OS.

2.2.1. Insert the update floppy supplied into your computer floppy drive.

2.2.2. Or, if updating from our web site downloaded file, extract the file onto a floppy disk, or to the default local directory created automatically upon execution, C:\BOSXXX, where XXX is the printer model. (30K printer will be used as example at this document).

2.2.3. From the Start\Run command in Windows, Type the following: x:\UPDATE, where ‘x’ is your floppy drive letter. (Usually a:\ or b:\, or your local default path, C:\BOS30K).

2.2.4. The printer LCD should then display the following sequence of messages:

• 'Reading COMP loader'
• 'Reading Component'
• 'Loading Printer Prog'
• 'Ready for Component'
• '1 Components Loaded'

In order for the changes to take effect you will need to restart your printer by cycling the power Off and On.

The total time for the update procedure should be approximately two minutes.

Note: In special cases the firmware includes a font file as well as a program. The font file is built into the printer at the time of manufacturing. If your firmware update includes the font file, the last message displayed in the printer LCD will be '2 Components Loaded’, then, and only then is the update procedure complete.

3. Update the printer via the USB port input
If using Windows 95 or Windows NT, revert to and follow instructions in section 2.2

3.1.1. Insert the update floppy supplied into your computer floppy drive.

3.1.2. Or, if updating from our web site downloaded file, extract the file onto a floppy disk, or to the default local directory created automatically upon execution, C:\BOSXXX, where XXX is the printer model. (30K printer will be used as example at this document).

3.1.3. From the Start\Run command in Windows, Type the following: x:\USBLoad.exe, where ‘x’ is your floppy drive letter. (Usually a:\ or b:\, or your local default path, C:\BOS30K).

3.1.4. A new installation window ‘USB Component Loader’ will be displayed.

3.1.5. Select the name of the component to be loaded: Printer Program or Fonts Library and press the Load button.

3.1.6. The printer LCD should then display the following sequence of messages:

• 'Reading COMP loader'
• 'Reading Component'
• 'Loading Printer Prog'
• 'Ready for Component'
• '1 Components Loaded'

This is the last message displayed on the printer LCD. In order for the changes to take effect you will need to restart your printer by cycling the power Off and On.

The total time for the update procedure should be approximately one minute.

4. Update the firmware via the printer PCMCIA Slot

4.1. Make sure the printer power switch is in the Off position.

4.2. Insert the PCMCIA Update card into the printer PCMCIA slot.

4.3. Press and hold the On Line key (EJECT ENV. Key on 11K, and 13K Models).

4.4. Still holding the On Line key (EJECT ENV. Key on 11K, and 13K Models), turn the power switch to the On position.

4.5. The printer LCD displays the message ‘System Starting’ followed by ‘System Bootloader ROM REV. xxxxxx’, where xxxxxx represent the current Bootloader version in the printer.

4.6. Release the On Line key (EJECT ENV. Key on 11K, and 13K Models).

4.7. The printer LCD displays the following message:

• 'Loading Printer Prog'
• '1 Components Loaded'

In order for the changes to take effect you will need to restart your printer by cycling the power Off and On.

The total time for the update procedure should be approximately two minutes.
